Kalamazoo Campground, northeast of Ely, Nevada, is closed for renovations and will not be open for the 2025 camping season. The closure is necessary for public safety. Kalamazoo Road will remain open throughout the project.

The site is undergoing a complete rebuild to update to expand the facilities and amenities there. The project is scheduled to continue through June of 2028.

“Currently, the area is a field full of tall grass with some old tables and barbeque rings,” said Erin Rajala, recreation and wilderness program manager for the Ely Ranger District.  “We’re going to clean it up, identify actual numbered campsites, bring in new tables and fire rings, and create a turnaround area for larger vehicles.  The entire site will be ADA compliant.”

The project is fully funded through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, which provides more than $1.1 million. Survey work is underway.

“When renovations are completed, it will offer a more maintenance-friendly and enhanced recreational experience for our visitors,” Rajala said.

The campground will charge a fee of $5 per night when it reopens.
