Sam Houston National Forest closes roads, recreation areas and trails

The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is closing the Sam Houston National Forest effective May 7, 2024. This closure includes roads, trails, and developed recreation sites, all of which have been severely affected by flooding and pose a risk to public health and safety.
“The safety of our visitors and employees is paramount,” said Kimpton Cooper, Forest Supervisor for National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. “We are working diligently to assess the damage, repair it, and open when it is safe.”
Cooper added that this closure order, FOREST SUPERVISOR ORDER No. 08-13-01-24-175, will remain in effect until May 21, 2024, at which time the closure can be extended if necessary.
All camping reservations for Friday, May 7, through Thursday, May 21, have been canceled through recreation.gov.
