Green Lake Park
Green Lake Park is historically significant. The shelter at Green Lake Park is a rare glimpse into the past. The shelter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Members of Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1695 constructed the building in 1937. They used local materials, including wood from cedar and pine trees. Members of Company 1695 also cleared the beach along the lake in front of the shelter and added sand to the beach.
Located at Camp Mountain during the construction of the shelter, CCC carpenter Clarence Way, an experienced blacksmith, carpenter, and mason, crafted the original benches and the masonry fireplace and chimney and perhaps the wrought iron letters and hinges with their attached decorative trees.
In 2023, the USDA FS signed a 25-year lease for the MHS to maintain and preserve the Green Lake Shelter at the Green Lake Beach and Picnic Site and to operate and maintain the site for the enjoyment of the public. Through the USDA FS agreement, the MHS continues to make great strides in getting the recreational area around Green Lake in Mountain, Wisconsin ready to re-open.
The park features a boat landing accessing Green Lake, which is no-wake lake.
After being closed to the public for nearly a decade, Green Lake Park in Mountain, Wisconsin re-opened to the public on May 25, 2024.
The park was one of approximately 11 percent of recreation areas in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest that had to be closed due to budget constraints in 2015. Key factors in the determination to re-open the park include Recreation Site Assessment findings, the demonstrated commitment of the Mountain Historical Society (“MHS”), and the historical significance of the park.
