Decision Notice Signed on Baker City Watershed Fuels Management Project

Release Date: June 11th, 2025

BAKER CITY, Ore. (June 11, 2025) â€” The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Whitman District Ranger signed the Decision Notice on the Baker City Watershed Fuels Management Project on June 6th, 2025.

Baker City Watershed Fuels Management Project is approximately 22,787 acres in size and lies 4 air miles west of Baker City, Oregon. This decision authorizes treatments to reduce hazardous fuels in the Baker City Watershed project area, the Baker City Municipal Watershed, and nearby private land from an uncharacteristic wildfire by conducting fuels reduction work including commercial and non-commercial thinning, and prescribed fire operations. This project is important in safeguarding the drinking water for Baker City.

The Baker City Watershed Project Area has a history of wildfires, with occurrences approximately twice the forest average. Reduction of the existing fuels loads is intended to help protect the watershed and nearby private land holdings by reducing the risk of a high-intensity wildfire on public lands  and to provide a safer environment and better opportunities for firefighters to control a wildfire.

This project has received tremendous amounts of community engagement over the last 15 year.
